Resettlement's Impact and Benefit
The pursuit of resettlement in Thailand has provided a concrete and lasting benefit for the refugees who have been resettled and led to a marked decline in the registered refugee population. The cooperation and participation with the Royal Thai Government, donor countries, and NGOs on resettlement has facilitated work in other areas of assistance.
At the same time, independent and UNHCR studies have documented the unintended consequences that large scale resettlement has had on the services provided in the refugee camps. Many educated and skilled refugees take the opportunity to be resettled. UNHCR, NGOs and the US government have been in regular dialogue for the past two years to come up with innovative solutions to address the concern.
