Venerable V. Vajiramedhi and Pu Praya represent Thailand in UNHCR’s World Refugee Day Message

Venerable V. Vajiramedhi, well-respected Buddhist monk, and Praya “Pu” Lundberg, renowned actress/ model from Thailand, are joining forces with celebrities around the world to spread a message with UNHCR on World Refugee Day, which falls on 20 June. With over 60 million people forced to flee from their homes - the highest number since WWII – Venerable V.Vajiramedhi and Praya “Pu” will represent Thailand among more than 60 celebrities around the world, including respected faith leader Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Hollywood actresses Cate Blanchett and Scarlett Johansson. Together they will convey messages supporting refugees and call upon all sectors to act with solidarity and stand with refugees.

The 30-second videos remind the public that refugees are just like us. They have the same hopes and dreams and in light of today’s refugee crisis, it’s essential to support them. Praya (Pu) also invites the public to sign a petition to show governments around the world that we stand #WithRefugees. The petition will be delivered in advance of September’s historic UN High-Level Plenary of the General Assembly on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants at the UN Headquarters in New York.

“This year UNHCR was honored to have Venerable V. Vajiramedhi and our devoted High-Profile Supporter, Praya “Pu” Lundberg as the voice for refugees,” said UNHCR Thailand Representative Ruvendrini Menikdiwela.  “We look forward to getting more support from all sectors in Thailand to help ease refugees’ sufferings.” The unprecedented number of forcibly displaced people worldwide has pushed humanitarian responses to the brink. It is simply not sustainable. So this year, UNHCR invites everyone to stand together #WithRefugees to show the world that we will leave no one behind.”

The global video will be screened at the 6th Refugee Film Festival held from 17 to 20 June at the Paragon Cineplex at Siam Paragon in Bangkok.
