Join the campaign with UNHCR and Niti 'Pompan' Chaichitathorn to save lives of LGBTI refugees and refugee families worldwide in You Are Safe Here campaign.
Currently, more than 70 countries around the world criminalize LGBTI people and 6 countries punish same-sex relations with the death penalty. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people face discrimination, persecution and violence on a daily basis. This often leaves LGBTI people with no choice but to seek asylum elsewhere.
“The fears did not go away, the threats did not go away, we still live in fear” Samer and Fadi, the Syrian couple fled home when Samer’s brother threatened to kill Fadi. Since then, they have been forced to move home six times in an effort to escape him.
Being an LGBTI refugee can add to the complex challenges and threats that a refugee faces after fleeing conflict. They need to find physical safety from war and conflict, whilst also being protected from threats and discrimination that can result from their LGBTI identity.
Persecuted members of the LGBTI community have a right to seek asylum and register as refugees with UNHCR. We are working to ensure that all UNHCR offices and registration facilities are welcoming, safe spaces, and that LGBTI refugees can access safe shelter, psychological and medical care and cash assistance to help them back on their feet. We also seek to resettle LGBTI refugees to third countries where possible, so that they can live in a safer place where their identity is respected.
You can provide protection to refugees forced to flee their homes due to persecution and discrimination.
