Protection
UNHCR ensures refugees, men, women and children, live in the camps in conditions of safety and security.
- Granting Asylum UNHCR supports the functioning of the Thai government’s Provincial Admission Boards (PABs) so that people fleeing fighting or political persecution in Myanmar have access to fair and effective procedures to determine their need for asylum.
- Access to Justice UNHCR strengthens the administration of justice within the camps. It does this through a number of activities that complement and support the Thai justice system: training refugees to understand their rights and responsibilities under Thai law; supporting the Thai authorities to investigate cases involving refugees; and co-funding Legal Assistance Centers run by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in three camps.
- Child Protection UNHCR protects refugee children in the camps, especially some 7,000 girls and boys without parents or guardian. In partnership with the Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees (COERR), UNHCR monitors all separated children, trains social workers to better protect vulnerable children in the camps, and supports regular home visits to the children by the social workers.
