Livelihoods
UNHCR supports its NGO partners to help refugees develop skills through agricultural, vocational, and language training. This training is designed to increase their self-reliance while they are in the camps and for a future beyond the camps.
- Agricultural project UNHCR supports ZOA, a Netherlands-based refugee organisation, to help refugees grow vegetables and raise fish, frogs, pigs and chickens, to build skills and earn a small income
- Skills Training UNHCR helps refugees in seven camps learn a wide range of skills -- weaving, cooking, sewing, computer skills, childcare and elderly care, hairdressing and other tranferable skills.
- Thai Language Lessons UNHCR supports the Ministry of Education non-formal education program to teach Thai language to refugees over 16 years old so they can communicate effectively with the local community and Thai authorities.
- English Language Lessons are also provided to prepare refugees for resettlement.
- Library UNHCR funds 12 permanent libraries and one mobile library for both children and adults, run by Japan’s Shanti Volunteer Association.
