Why Donate to UNHCR?

Established in 1950, UNHCR provides international protection to refugees and helps governments find permanent solutions for refugees. In more than six decades, the agency has helped tens of millions of people restart their lives. Today, a staff of some 7,190 people in more than 120 countries continues to help some 36.4 million people.UNHCR has won two Nobel Peace Prizes.

The Thai government invited UNHCR to begin working in Thailandin 1975when hundreds of thousands of refugees fled to Thailandfrom Cambodia, Laosand Vietnam, in what became known as the Indochinese refugee crisis. More than 1.3 million refugees have been hosted by Thailandover the years.  Together with the governments of Thailandand Cambodia, UNHCR successfully helped the refugees go back home safely and with dignity.

Today there are some 95,000 registered refugees and some 10,000asylum seekers from Myanmarliving in nine camps in Thailand. They were forced to flee from their homes due to conflicts and violence in their country. Most refugees lose everything.  They have very little choice but to spend decades in a camp. Your donation will allow UNHCR to

  • Provide protection especially children without parents and vulnerable women
  • provide refugees with skills to become self-reliant
  • offer lasting solution to start new life in the third country

Almost all of UNHCR’ fund relies on voluntary contributions. Having a regular and long-term donation is vital to the continuation of UNHCR's operation to protect refugees.

At present, UNHCR Thailand raises funds via its face-to-face fundraising program only because the program allows UNHCR to reduce administrative costs to the lowest possible level and to direct funds towards helping refugees to the fullest extent.

What is face-to-face fundraising program?

It is a person-to-person recruitment method that involves asking individuals to make monthly donations to UNHCR via a secure credit card system. The program is being carried out at shopping malls, office buildings and other public places by almost 40 fundraising representatives who have good knowledge of UNHCR.

UNHCR has assigned APPCO Thailand to manage our face-to-face fundraising program since mid-2008. APPCO is part of the global Cobra Group, which operates in over 20 countries and now has over 100 charity and development organisation clients worldwide.

As of July 2011, UNHCR has over 22,000 supporters who donate to help refugees in Thailandon a regular basis and we expect to reach almost 24,000 donors by the end of the year.
